The island map project is a favorite among 6th graders. After studying about geography and community they create their very own island and distinct island civilization. Students first brainstorm what they want their island to be like—considering the society, the community on the island, and the physical geography. Then they write a proposal describing and defining their island civilization, create a travel brochure, and build a three-dimensional map (to scale) of their island, which they present to the class. The resulting maps are striking and can be seen in many corners and classrooms around the school, including in the permanent display case on the upper floor.
