Ceramic Student Honored with State Award

A Northwest School ceramic student has been awarded a honorable mention at the 2017 Washington State Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Peter G. '18 will have his piece on display at the Cornish College Main Campus, 1000 Lenora Street, Seattle, from Feb. 15-17, between 12:00-5:00 pm.

Peter created Hawksbilled Turtle in response to ceramics teacher Randy Silver's Sculpt an Endangered Animal Project. Peter used two different hand-building techniques: solid-hollow and slab-building. Then, he added color and gloss with commercial glazes and underglazes. He fired his piece to oxidation at 1800 degrees Farenheit in Northwest's electric kiln.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Program, which is one of the largest sources of scholarships for young artists and writers, gives students from all over America the opportunity to broaden their creative horizons and earn local and national recognition.
