Northwest Runner Wins Prestigious National Award

Northwest School senior Tibebu P., also known as Tibs, has been named the 2016-17 Gatorade Washington Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year. Tibs now goes on to vie for the national Gatorade award with runners from all fifty states in the nation.

"I appreciate that Gatorade looks at more than just what an athlete does in competition when choosing its award winners and I think they saw in Tibs what we all see in Tibs: an exceptionally fine young man who also happens to be an exceptionally strong runner," says Northwest Schoo cross country head coach Joe Bisignano.

As a Gatorade Player of the year, Tibs received a $1,000 grant to donate to a national or local youth sports organization as part of the Gatorade Play It Forward program.

In fall 2016, Tibs won the Class1A individual Washington state championship for the second-consecutive year, finishing with a time of 15:22.4. He went on to finish seventh nationally at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships, in San Diego, California, with a time of 15:10.6.

In November 2016, Tibs signed a National Letter of Intent to join the University of Washington cross country and track and field team on scholarship.
