Northwest Student Wins Photography Contest

Congratulations to Northwest School senior Nina A., who has won first place for Documentary Photo in the 2019 Washington State High School Photography Contest, held on May 4.

Nina’s photo was taken last summer at the United States-Mexico border, in Tijuana, Mexico. She witnessed a rare event in which someone swimming in Mexican water accidentally got pulled by the current into U.S. territory. The border wall was briefly opened so the swimmer could be brought back to Mexico since it was an unintentional crossing.

“I think that this is an especially important visual in this current political landscape,” says Nina. “With everything that is happening at the border, photos can help us see the real people interacting there and how their lives are affected.”

Nina was one of seven Northwest students whose photos were selected out of the thousands of entries for the competition. Click here to view all the winning photos.
