Over 100 Students Take Stage in Choir Performance

Nearly one-fifth of the student body delivered a fantastic evening of choral music on Thursday, Nov. 8, at the First Covenant Church. The four choirs of the Northwest School sang a total of 20 songs from all over the world.

The combined choirs opened the evening with a performance of The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby," accompanied by members of the Northwest School orchestra.

The Middle School Choir performed a variety of folk songs, including "Kutsu Ga Naru" from Japan, and "Tongo," a canoe folk song from the Soloman Islands. The 9-10 Choir continued the world tour, performing the Greek folk song "Gerakina." The 11-12 Choir performed the Israeli song "Dodi Li" and the Mandarin carol "Sheng Ye Quing."

The A Capella choir wrapped up the evening with a mixture of current hits such as "Light in the Hallway" by Pentatonix and old classics such as "Long Time Traveller" and "Do Right."

Choir Director Dana Sewall tapped The Northwest School community for proper language pronunciation and cultural context for each of the songs, specifically noting how choral program rehearses and performs each song in a way that respects, honors, and elevates the culture and tradition of the songs.
