College Counseling

Every Northwest School student is assigned a college counselor in the 11th grade. College counselors teach research and decision-making skills and challenge students to take ownership of the process. At the end of the process, our goal is not only a positive college outcome, but also that each student has discovered and learned to articulate his or her skills, interests, and talents.

Resources & Services

In addition to writing the school letters of recommendation for students’ college applications, Northwest’s College Counseling Office offers a variety of resources and services to students and families, including:

  • Individual Meetings
  • Resume and Essay Support
  • Workshops
  • Application Work Parties
  • Standardized Test Prep Resources
  • College & Scholarship Research Library

For more information on these offerings, view our College Counseling Timeline (PDF).

College Representative Visits

Representatives from more than 130 colleges and universities visit NWS each year. Upcoming visits are posted in Naviance and on the bulletin board outside of the college office. Students are invited to attend these upcoming visits during the school day. Click here for a list of college representatives who visited NWS this past year.

Summer, Gap Years, & Special Programs

We encourage all students to consider meaningful summer plans and to take advantage of travel, work, and volunteer experiences. Through these experiences, students are able to expand current interests or explore new ones. We are available to support students who wish to pursue a formal gap year program, volunteer opportunity, or overseas experience, and we maintain resources related to these opportunities in our College Research Library.
