Let the Games Begin!

Upper School athletes are practicing hard for the start of the rescheduled fall season beginning on Feb. 15.

“Seeing the enthusiasm and determination bubbling out of students as they play, challenge themselves and their teammates, and laugh with each other is awesome,” says Athletic Director Britt Atack. “Everyone goes home feeling better than when they came. There’s a sense of accomplishment and growth.”

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) governs how and when sports take place throughout schools in the state of Washington. This year, each season will take place over a tightened period, beginning with the sports traditionally played in the fall.

  • Season 1 – Feb. 15-April 4: “Fall” Sports (girl’s soccer, boy’s ultimate, cross country, girl’s volleyball)
  • Season 2 – March 29-May 15: “Spring” Sports (girl’s ultimate, boy’s soccer, track and field)
  • Season 3 – May 10-June 26: “Winter” Sports (girl’s basketball, boy’s basketball, mixed ultimate)

The Northwest School has established comprehensive COVID-19 Return to Play protocols so that practices are conducted in accordance with current guidelines from health authorities, and those protocols have been adjusted as guidelines are updated. For each practice, students conduct a daily symptom screening and temperature check and masks are work at all times. In addition, all equipment and surfaces are disinfected after every use.

“Vigilance has been and remains the foundation to being able to bring students together for practices,” says Britt. “We work hard to maintain a feeling of safety and comfort for everyone at our practices.”
