Jaizi Abedania, MFA
Visual Arts Teaching Faculty
Jaizi has 18 years of experience teaching mixed media and lens-based arts to middle school, high school, and college students. They engage learners by incorporating diverse perspectives and works of social activism into their curriculum. Jaizi's aim is to broaden students’ worldviews while fostering a deep sense of community and socioemotional awareness.
At The Northwest School, Jaizi appreciates the emphasis on cultural exchange and collective care, which align with their teaching philosophy. Drawing inspiration from educators and activists like Paulo Freire, Augusto Boal, and bell hooks, Jaizi facilitates lessons that encourage students to develop their artistic practices as tools for self-expression and change.
Jaizi’s teaching experience spans institutions such as Adelphi University, East Palo Alto Phoenix Academy, and the Brooklyn Museum. Their work includes leading extracurricular programs in mural arts, photography, and filmmaking. A passionate advocate for historically underrepresented populations, Jaizi continues to support diverse communities through the arts.
Jaizi holds a BS in Comprehensive Design from UC Davis and an MFA in Photo, Video, and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts in New York.
