Environmental Sustainability
Our Environmental Sustainability Learning Community
We are committed to caring for the environment by learning and putting into action sustainability practices that protect our planet and the future.
Environmental sustainability is at the heart of The Northwest School’s mission, shaping our curriculum, community, and operations. From fostering social responsibility and global awareness to inspiring tangible action, we empower students to create a more sustainable future.
Biodiversity
Seventh graders are engaging in hands-on learning about how to increase biodiversity. Britescapes, our landscaping partner, has been co-teaching the process. The students are involved in every step—measuring and mapping the site, propagating native plants indoors, and planting them in outdoor spaces.

Service Learning: Thinking Locally, Acting Globally
In the Service Learning Program, we put our values into action. Students spend a year learning deeply about the social and environmental factors affecting critical resources and partner with community organizations to take meaningful action. Through the program students cultivate a mindset of responsibility for themselves, their community, and the world at large and learn that they have individual and collective impact, at every age.
Carbon Neutrality Commitment
Inspired by student advocacy, The Northwest School is committed to achieving carbon neutrality.
We’re reducing our carbon footprint by implementing energy-efficient upgrades and rethinking operational practices.
Our strategy includes:
- Making sustainable commitments based on the latest science.
- Using offsets where it’s not possible to reduce emissions.
- Tracking progress through detailed reporting.
- Reducing emissions through innovative solutions.
This commitment extends to every corner of our campus, from how we operate our facilities to how we engage our community.
Sustainable Facilities
Sustainability drives how we design, operate, and manage our facilities.
In 2019, we received the Green Ribbon School Award. In 2022, we committed to achieving carbon neutrality—a goal supported by both sustainably managing our building systems and a community-wide culture of environmental stewardship.
We are strategically updating our building systems to increase sustainability and closely manage the systems to insure they’re operating most efficiently. Meanwhile, school-wide campaigns encourage reducing material consumption, adopting sustainable purchasing practices, and fostering a collective commitment to sustainability in our everyday actions. Some examples include:
- High-efficiency boilers and heat pumps
- LED lighting with sensors
- Recycled paper products
- Reusable decorations for events
Socially Responsible Investments
100% of The Northwest School’s endowment is invested using ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria. This ensures our investments align with our mission, values, and long-term sustainability goals, supporting our students’ futures.
