This year, with a record number of donations, Northwest School ceramics students have created, glazed, and donated 46 ceramic bowls to an Empty Bowls fundraiser that benefits Seattle’s North Helpline Emergency Services and Food Bank. Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger.
The project is a valuable educational experience that helps bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world, while contributing to student education, and our community.
On top of giving to a worthy cause many of the bowls created for Empty Bowls were the result of collaborations between students who are refining their skills on the potter's wheel, and students who are focusing on design and glaze experimentation. This year, some of the bowls were glazed by parents and guardians during our first ever "Clay Night" ceramics experience.
The basic premise of Empty Bowls is simple: handcrafted are created and donated by artisans and students. Guests and patrons are then invited to a simple meal of soup, salad, and bread. They select a handcrafted bowl, included in the price of admission, to keep as a reminder of all the Empty Bowls and hunger issues throughout the world.
This year the event will take place on March 24th, from 1-4PM in Hangar 30 at Magnuson Park.
This is Northwest School’s twelfth year of participation. Ceramics students donated 46 bowls this year, which brings our grand total to 457. More information about the event is available here and at Northhelpline.org.
