Kris Huang '23

“Hi, my name is Kris Huang. I graduated from Northwest in 2023 and I’m currently a freshman at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

During my time at Northwest I cherished the close-knit community it fostered, especially the smaller class sizes, where teachers would provide individual care and assistance to students facing more specific challenges.

This sense of community at Northwest extended beyond academics; for example, in sports, particularly basketball, the team felt more like a family rather than just a sports team. Similarly, the dorm became a safe place for me. People in the dorm made Northwest feel the most like home amidst my international student experience.

Northwest also helped prepare me for my time in college. The extensive writing requirements in my Humanities classes helped me develop valuable writing skills giving me the skills necessary for college essays. During my senior year Humanities class, we completed a challenging research essay, which helped sharpen my research and analytical abilities to further prepare me for college. This experience has proven instrumental in fostering my confidence and proficiency in tackling longer college essays.

Lastly, my teachers at Northwest instilled in me the mindset to wholeheartedly pursue my passions without being hindered by the fear of failure or embarrassment. Northwest faculty and programs encouraged me to discover myself and truly grow, offering me incredible opportunities to delve deeply into my interests, whether they were sports or musical hobbies or potential career paths. I have a lot of people from Northwest to thank for helping me get where I am today.”
