New Humanities Faculty — Samuel J. Timinsky, PhD

Dr. Samuel J. Timinsky has been teaching history, rhetoric, politics, and debate at the university, high school, and middle school levels for 14 years and is excited to join the team at The Northwest School this year! Samuel received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2020, specializing in the history of masculinity and capitalism in Japan. He also holds an M.A. in International Studies from the University of Washington, earned in 2012.

Before joining NWS, Samuel taught at various institutions, including The Nueva School in San Mateo, CA, and the Robinson Center for Young Scholars. He has received numerous teaching awards, including the University of Chicago’s Outstanding Educator Award in 2022. Additionally, Samuel has extensive experience coaching speech and debate, with his students winning a national championship in Parliamentary Debate in 2023.

Samuel believes that humanities education is essential for building empathy in students and equipping them with the skills for a lifetime of advocacy. He thrives on delving into the intricacies of prose and text and is excited to be part of a humanities-focused school like The Northwest School, where there is a deep commitment to amplifying the voices of its diverse student body and honoring our global ancestors. Samuel looks forward to growing as an educator within a truly cross-disciplinary team, serving the many different populations represented by NWS families.
