New Physics/Math Faculty — Clarissa Lovegren

Clarissa was drawn to The Northwest School from the start, impressed by its emphasis on real-world applications in course content and a student-driven educational environment. She is excited to join a team that inspires and challenges students, and she looks forward to creating authentic, relevant, hands-on learning experiences with the support and expertise of her colleagues at NWS.

Clarissa earned her undergraduate degree from Seattle Pacific University, where she was introduced to inquiry-based physics education while pursuing a BA in Physics with a Math minor. She continued her education at SPU in the Masters in Teaching Math and Science program. Additionally, she has completed multiple extension courses through the University of Phoenix focused on engaging and supporting multilingual learners. Through UCLA, she has taken courses ranging from teaching upper-level physics in high school to integrating technology into the classroom—fortunately, completing the latter just before the pandemic.

Clarissa has taught mathematics for two years and physics for eight, working in various educational settings, including alternative, military, public, and public charter schools—experiences that have kept her adaptable and innovative. She has served as a course lead at two previous schools and as the advisor for the Women in STEM club. One of her most impactful professional experiences was collaborating with other public school teachers in California to provide feedback to the State Education Office on state science exam questions that were commonly missed by students from learning populations identified as "Moderate" to "Severe."

Clarissa’s teaching philosophy centers on active engagement, critical thinking, and teamwork. She believes in encouraging students to apply their knowledge to real-world situations, preparing them for today’s dynamic environment. Clarissa is eager to become a valuable member of the vibrant NWS community and to collaborate with fellow educators in creating a nurturing and intellectually stimulating atmosphere for students.
